WHAT DID YOU SAY?  WHAT DID I HEAR?

Abbas Naaseri / If I don’t say it, perhaps this concern will settle in the depths of my heart forever. Although your voice was coming from afar, I could hear what you were saying. Your voice was so clear that there was no need to come closer and whisper it in my ear. There was no sound of traffic, no commotion from the crowd, nor any noise pollution that made me doubt what I heard. However, it seemed that what I correctly heard, you had shouted incorrectly...

For some time, valid or invalid calls for submissions have been published with topics that are as clear as day. But the strange thing arises when the results are announced, and the winning works do not relate to the topic stated in the guidelines.

I congratulate the winners. It’s not their fault. They participated in an event like everyone else. But where is the problem?

Do we hear or read the topics incorrectly? Do translation issues occur? (While some topics are so clear they do not need translation.) Or do the organizers forget what topic they suggested after announcing the rules and approach the judging with a new mindset about the topic? Furthermore, the selection of weak, unqualified, and non cartoonist, and select who relationship-based judges could be another flaw.

It may also be possible that some topics have different meanings in various cultures. In this case, the organizer must add more detailed explanations in the guidelines.

However, wherever the fault may lie, the only result is that it severely discourages artists who have made efforts to ideate around the competition topic.

If you search the whole world, you will not find artists with the integrity of cartoonists; they adapt to all kinds of situations and circumstances. Please rectify your flaws with respect to these artists.

Cartoonists are so in love with their work that, as Rumi says:

"Without love, every sound is just a drumbeat;

Every sound I have heard in the world."
