"You are the gamble of love, and I am the gambler."

Abbas Naaseri / In today’s world, where more than eight billion people are engaged in economic issues, filling their stomachs, accumulating wealth, trade, politics, and so on, art is considered by many to be nothing more than a useless endeavor, a hobby, or a mere pastime. However, for me as a cartoonist, none of these can prevent my passion for cartoons. Being a cartoonist opens my eyes and the eyes of the world to truths that are essential for understanding the philosophy of life. Perhaps, as Jitet Kustana, the Indonesian cartoonist, said, the purpose of becoming a cartoonist is to worship God. If art is nothing but the artist’s feeling, cartoons are the best medium for conveying this feeling to others. In my opinion, honest, beautiful, even spiritual, and human art is manifested in cartoons. A cartoon just doesn’t attract the audience with strong technique; instead, it simplifies the expression and transmission of feelings and makes understanding it more accessible.

But all of this looks great on paper; in reality, things are different. Reality is different from what is on paper all over the world.

Today, if a young person asks for my advice on starting, I would honestly try to discourage them from becoming an artist. What is on paper is a utopia, which ultimately becomes obstructed by media managers, exhibitions, nepotism, judgments, relationships, political and religious leaders, and even people, each with their own beliefs, thoughts, and perspectives. Whether consciously or unconsciously, they become obstacles to the expression of your feelings. You may find yourself elevated by the cheers of some and brought down by the jeers of others. In such a situation, you are forced into seclusion, expressing your uncensored feelings in solitude. Becoming a cartoonist in reality is a completely uncertain path. Perhaps, to be blunt, achieving success in this path is almost impossible. By embarking on this path, you are gambling with your life, time, future, and feelings, hoping to find a chance of success. Although life itself is a gamble.

The distance between success in this gamble is like the distance between Monday and Sunday—just as far, just as close...

Thank God humans only live once, so if you become a cartoonist or anything else, strive to be the best version of yourself..."
